Origin of the Contest

Starting from 2018, an essay competition has been launched to build a bridge that connects mathematics and literature. The competition encourages cross-disciplinary learning and the use of mathematical knowledge to foster independent and logical thinking, and aims to promote a culture of popular scientific writing and an interest in mathematics among children and youth.

Objectives

  1. Cross-disciplinary learning: Students will be guided to apply mathematical knowledge in a variety of ways.
  2. Cultivating communication and expression skills: Using mathematical and literary symbols to express their life experiences.
  3. Energizing education: Accepting entries in both English and Chinese worldwide to let the world recognize Taiwan’s creativity in education.

Upper Elementary School Division
Contemporary Chinese poems
(A maximum of 25 lines, excluding blank lines. The number of words is not limited. The number of contestant is limited to one.)

Junior High School Division

Marking Criteria

Mathematical concepts (35%):Degree of utilization, weighting, mathematical accuracy
Literary devices (35%):Stylistic devices, clarity and richness of meaning
Creativity (30%):Choice of topic, integration of mathematics with other disciplines

Awards and Prizes

  1. Gold, Silver, and Bronze Award winners will be awarded with the priority status for academic visits, a certificate of merit and a trophy.
  2. Mentors of the Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards winners will be awarded a certificate of appreciation and a mentoring prize of NT$1,000.
  3. A Certificate of Appreciation will be given to each recipient of the merit award and honorable mention.
  4. Participants who meet the eligibility criteria will be awarded a “Certificate of Participation” by National Taiwan Normal University.

In order to encourage participants to exchange with ideas with one another and broaden their global horizons, overseas visits will be arranged by the organizer with priority given to the winners. In case of the inability to organize the tour due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tour will be changed to a domestic tour or postponed with separate notice.

Eligibility and submission method

  1. Eligibility:Students from upper elementary schools to senior and vocational high schools worldwide, and homeschoolers with equivalent qualifications.
  2. Each student must have a mentor from the school, except for homeschoolers.
  3. Application and submission deadline:January 18, 2023, 23:59 (Wed)
    Applicants are required to submit all three documents, “Submission Form (PDF file and WORD file together), and Consent Form”, to the file upload section of this application form at the same time before January 18, 2023, 23:59 (Wed). Please make sure to include the names of the school and the contestant in the file name

  4. Submission methods:
    • Please submit your entries in the format provided by the organizer in A4 size, in 12-point font, and in horizontal format. Use “新細明體” for Chinese works and “Times New Roman” for English works.
    • Please do not write or type any personal information that is not in the submission form, nor add any marks to the submission. Non-compliant contestants will not be included in the selection.
    • Submissions are limited to Microsoft Office Word or PDF. No other file formats are accepted.
    • The entries must be written in either English or Chinese according to the category. Translations, plagiarism, fraudulent use of other people’s work, use of other people’s names in entries, or collective creation and translation will not be included in the selection.
    • Submissions must be first-time entries that have never been published in any newspapers, magazines and digital media (including websites, blogs, social media platforms, or various forms of electronic publishing). They also must not be submitted to other competitions at the same time. Entries that have won prizes in other competitions will not be accepted.
    • The Organizer shall not be liable for any delay, loss, error, illegibility or damage to the information sent or registered by the entrant or the submitted work due to any computer, internet, telephone, technical or other reasons not attributable to the Organizer. Contestants shall not raise any objection to such delay or damage.
    • The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify any entry that fails to meet the above criteria. Should any violation be reported and confirmed after the competition, the organizer will not only disqualify the winner, but also has the right to revoke the prize money and medals, and disclose the facts of the violation. All legal responsibilities shall be borne by the contestant.

Collection of awards and prizes

  1. The Organizer will notify the recipients of the prizes by email and publish the list of winners on the website of the event. Recipients must sign and return the relevant documents within the prize collection period before they can receive the prize. If the prize is not collected after the deadline or in accordance with the regulations, the prize will be deemed to be forfeited and the recipient shall not raise any objection.
  2. Award recipients shall pay taxes in accordance with the provisions of the Income Tax Act of the Republic of China. In accordance with Article 2, Paragraph 7 of the “Standard on Withholding Rates for Various Income Categories” established by the National Taxation Bureau of the Ministry of Finance, the Organizer will issue a tax withholding certificate to the award recipients in accordance with the provisions of the Tax Act, and 10% of the winning amount or prize value exceeding NT$20,000 shall be withheld as required by law (20% of tax shall be withheld for individuals not residing in the R.O.C.). When filing income tax returns, the winner may deduct the amount of tax withheld from the withholding certificate against the comprehensive income tax.
  3. In case of any loss, theft or damage of the trophies, certificates and prizes after they are released/sent, neither the Organizer nor the co-organizers will offer any replacement. The Organizer reserves the right to handle any unawarded prizes and to replace the originally announced prizes with other prizes of comparable value.
  4. Award recipients are required to attend the ceremony for the presentation of the winning entries hosted by the Organizer.

Copyright Law and Other Points to Note

  1. The submitted works must be original without copying, imitating, or plagiarizing other people’s works. If there is any legal responsibility for copyright or infringement of other people’s rights, the provider of the work shall be responsible for the legal responsibility. Should the Organizer’s rights be damaged as a result, the contestant shall be liable to compensate the Organizer for such damages.
  2. The contestant shall enter into a copyright authorization agreement with the Organizer in accordance with the Copyright Law. The copyright and other rights of the winning work shall be vested in the Organizer and shall be used by the Organizer and its sublicensees, and the contestant undertakes not to exercise the personality rights of the copyrighted work. The Organizer reserves the right to modify the winning work and the author shall not raise any objection.
  3. Contestants shall guarantee that all information provided is true and correct and that they have not misused or misappropriated other people’s information. Any inaccurate or incorrect information will result in disqualification from participating in the contest or winning the prize. Should the Organizer be unable to notify the winner of the award, the Organizer shall not be responsible for the result and the contestant shall be held liable for any damage to the rights of the Organizer or others.
  4. In case of force majeure or special circumstances, the Organizer reserves the right to change the content and methods of the event based on the announcement on the official website of the event. The Organizer reserves the right to explain and change the content of the contest if there are any doubts or other outstanding issues.
